Of course, all of the electronics, RF, digital, and other theory you may have learned is by the boards now, don't you know.
All components -- resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers, transistors, ICs, etc. have a small amount of smoke inserted inside them at the factory that causes them to do what they do..
..and when you let that smoke out, the component (and the attendant circuit) stops working.
